Marc owns a gold mine near the Beni River in the dense jungles of Bolivia, the home of lovely orchids and exotic birds. It is also home to the jaguar, the venomous bushmaster and the fer-de-lance. He hires a doctor to oversee his clinic after an Indian worker from a small town on the slopes of Illampu is killed by a fer-de-lance. A love affair develops between Marc and Val, the beautiful but unhappy wife of the doctor, an affair consummated on the Island of the Sun on Lake Titicaca, as politicians and secret police in La Paz conspire to take the immensely profitable mine for themselves. Realizing that they need more technical information before they take over the mine, they set Aurora de Cadiz, a beautiful actress and mistress of the Minister of Finance, the task of securing the information by seducing Marc's childhood friend and partner. In the final chapters, Marc's small plane is forced down by army fighters, and after his escape from jail he races to the slopes of Illampu in search of Val.

I read this in one weekend! What a great short story -- lots of action, romance and a surprise ending (that is hard to do nowadays!) Usually by the time you get to the end you know what is going to happen -- not many authors today hold back hints and it gives it away too soon. This action packed novel takes place in the lush Bolivian jungle. There, Marc Lipatti,the operator of a gold mine, hires a Peruvian doctor to oversea a clinic Marc has set up for his workers. The doctor arrives with his beautiful, but unhappy wife, Val, and the plot thickens. For those who like action and romance in an exotic setting, this novel fits the bill.
An Andes summit standing at nearly 21,000 feet, Illampu's "ancient face" watches men's actions unfold in the Bolivian jungle. Riveting counterpoints of ancient and contemporary, exotic and familiar, noble and nefarious are adeptly woven into the story. Illampu, however, is as much a character as any human in the book and does not sedately watch the action. With poetic description and a spotlight on a rarely illuminated area of the world, this novel entertains, informs and reflects on life as well as death.
